What is a Phono Stage or Phono Preamplifier?

A Phono Stage or Phono Preamplifier takes the very low level output from your turntables cartridge and amplifies it to a level were a standard line level input on your amplifier can be used. Moving Magnet cartridges have typical output levels in the region of 3 - 5 mV, while moving coil cartridges have even lower outputs in the region of 0.2 - 0.5 mV. A typical line input on an integrated amplifier will have an input sensitivity of between 200 - 500 mV.

Do You need one?

If your amplifier or preamplifier does not have a dedicated Phono stage - either MM/MC or both and your turntable does not have a built in phono stage then you will need one to use your turntable with your HiFi System.

At Dooleys HiFi we are able to offer our customers a range of Phono Stages at a wide range of price points (£70 to over £3500) from Pro-Ject, Musical Fidelity and Lehmann Audio.

For more details please contact Mike on 01625 264666 and discuss your requirements.
As the Worlds largest manufacturer of turntables it seems only natural that Pro-Ject would also turn out to be one, if not the biggest manufacturer of stand-alone phono stages under their Box-Design brand.

Musical Fidelity have established themselves as one of the most innovative Phono Stage manufacturers.

Regardless of the price point Musical Fidelity has gained a reputation of designing some of the most accurate and musical sounding phono stages available to day.

The last 18 months have seen Musical Fidelity completely revamp the range of phono stages they offer, from the LXLP-2 (What-HiFi 5 Star Review), MX-Vynl (HiFi Choice Editors Award Winner), the NEW M6-Vinyl and the NUVISTA Vinyl (HiFi News Outstanding Product).
