xt9 Hi-Fi-News-Highly-Commended Xtension9-EISA-Award-2014

The Xtension 9 is an ideal solution for anyone who is looking for the exceptional sound quality of the Xtension 10 in a more compact, rack friendly size and at a more appealing price.

The Xtension 9 incorporates all of Pro-Ject's 20 years experience in turntable design.

Chassis
The chassis is made from MDF which gives a high mass and is non-resonant. But in addition the turntable also uses magnetic feet, which decouple the main plinth from its base. The result of this combination is a merging of the influential 'mass loaded' and 'floating turntable' design principles.

Platter
Instead of the old-standard adoption of pure metal for a main platter, Pro-Ject researched and uncovered a perfect alloy material, which has then be damped on the inner side with thermo plastic elastomers (TPE). Taking this base structure, they've then glued recycled Vinyl records to the top (which act as a perfect mat) and baked this 'sandwich' before precision balancing it. The Xtension 9 subsequently benefits from a wonderfully resonance-free, heavy platter, that runs ultra-silently on an inverted ceramic ball-bearing, with magnetic suspension.

Tonearm
The Xtension 9 comes pre-fitted with the Pro-Ject 9cc Evolution Tonearm. Constructed from carbon-fibre, the armtube is efficiently designed to lead parasitic vibrations away from the cartridge into the mounting board which guarantees the precise tracking of the record grooves by the needle and also facilitates fine adjustment of vertical and horizontal tracing.

Cartridge
The Ortofon Quintet Black comes pre-fitted to the Xtension 9. Graced with a Nude Shibata diamond, the Quintet Black is considered one of the best stylus profiles available, mounted on a high-performance Boron cantilever. The Shibata’s slim, highly polished profile allows an exceedingly wide contact area to the walls of the groove and ensures detailed and pure reproduction through out the spectrum, including even the most high frequency groove details.

Finally, the Xtension 9 is also supplied with a beautiful dustcover with adjustable hinges, and is available in three high-gloss lacquer finishes. Black, Red or White.

xt10 Hi-Fi-News-Highly-Commended

The Xtension 10 is an ideal solution for anyone who is looking for the exceptional sound quality of the standard Xtension in a more compact size and at a more appealing price.

The Xtension 10 incorporates all of Pro-Ject's 20 years experience in turntable design.

Chassis
The chassis is made from MDF filled with metal sand, which gives a high mass and is non-resonant. But in addition the turntable also uses magnetic feet, which decouple the main plinth from its base. The result of this combination is a merging of the influential 'mass loaded' and 'floating turntable' design principles.

Platter
Instead of the old-standard adoption of pure metal for a main platter, Pro-Ject researched and uncovered a perfect alloy material, which has then be damped on the inner side with Sorbothane®. Taking this base structure, they've then glued recycled Vinyl records to the top (which act as a perfect mat) and baked this 'sandwich' before precision balancing it. The Xtension 10 subsequently benefits from a wonderfully resonance-free, heavy platter, that runs ultra-silently on an inverted ceramic ball-bearing, with magnetic suspension.

Tonearm
The base of the included Pro-Ject 10cc Evolution Tonearm also benefits from 'high-mass' technologies, and is isolated from the main board by a sheet of Sorbothane®. To use this tonearm with a wide range of top quality phono cartridges, from 4 to 14g, it comes with a set of 4 different Sorbothane®- damped counterweights.

Finally, the Xtension 10 is also supplied with a beautiful dustcover with adjustable hinges, and is available in three high-gloss lacquer finishes. Black, Mahogany or Olive

A meeting of principles
Before the Xtension the acclaimed 6 Perspex had already proven the fantastic result of using magnets to isolate the subchassis. So, consequently, for the Xtension this technology has been re-developed to utilise new magnetic feet, which almost completely decouple the main plinth. Combine this with the weighty 25kg total mass of the turntable, and the listener benefits from minimal base resonance. This is a unique combination of 'mass loaded' and 'floating turntable' design principals.

Heavy metal
In keeping with these principles, the platter is metal due to its higher mass than acrylic. However, the old standard adoption of pure metal has been abandoned because of its highly-resonant tendencies. Instead, they found a perfect alloy which has then been dampened on the inner side with Sorbothane®. Taking this base, Pro-Ject then glued recycled Vinyl records to the top (which act as a perfect mat) and bake this 'sandwich' before precision balancing it. The final product subsequently benefits from a wonderfully resonance-free, heavy platter.

Thinking of the arm
Another consideration was the amount of energy the tonearm base would have to take from arm and cartridge movement. These energies have to be controlled, as do those from the motor and the bearing (they have to be kept away from the tonearm to avoid interference). Consequently, the tonearm base on the Xtension also benefits from 'high-mass' technologies, and is isolated from the main board by a sheet of Sorbothane®. Importantly though, this board is still able to incorporate the adoption of different tonearms.

Attention to detail
As was originally premised with this turntable, to be in keeping with its 'classic' ethos, the Xtension comes with a beautiful dustcover with adjustable hinges, as well as several finish options in a high-gloss lacquer. Ultimately, the Xtension truly delivers a timelessly classic, exclusive analogue experience.
Key Features:
It is apparent throughout contemporary culture that modern and classical designs are working, more than ever before, in harmony. Countless varying product categories, such as cars, watches and furniture, are all embracing the ever-popular retro trend. The reasoning behind this love of 'retro' is it's inherent mix of classical beauty, combined with absolute mechanical precision, high-quality components, and superior performance.

Pro-Ject products gave analog a new life in the nineties; their products have successfully shown that you can listen to music in a better way than with any contemporary digital medium, and it doesn't have to cost the earth.

However, by creating the Xtension, Pro-Ject aimed to bring back a classical analog concept from the eighties, and combine it with their advanced contemporary technologies. After eighteen years of turntable manufacturing for analog lovers on a budget, the Xtension represents Pro-Ject's first deck not subscribed to budgetary limitations; and boy does it deliver.
